Hoang Anh Phan is a fifth-year Ph.D. candidate in Chemistry, working at the interface of biology and chemistry in Dr. E. James Petersson’s laboratory. Her research focuses on designing stabilized thioamide peptides as imaging and therapeutic agents. Before Penn, Hoang Anh completed her undergraduate study as a Kofi Annan Scholar at Macalester College (St. Paul, Minnesota), with a double major in Biology and Chemistry (with Honors) along with an Added Emphasis in Biochemistry to each major.

At Penn, Hoang Anh has been involved in GAPSA since her second year; she was a member of the International Student Affairs committee for 2 years before leading the committee as the director in 2021-2022. Hoang Anh is excited to come back to GAPSA this year as the Vice President of Advocacy to advocate and provide holistic support for our student body. Beyond GAPSA, she also serves as the Chair of the Professional Advancement Committee of Penn Women in Chemistry and a Weingarten Ambassador. In her free time, Hoang Anh enjoys taking long walks, reading for pleasure, playing the piano, listening to all different kinds of music, writing short play scripts & poems, watching TV shows, and exploring different ethnic cuisines.

I want to join GAPSA as it serves as the bridge between the student & the University administration, thereby holding the key to connect, empower, and support our graduate & professional student community.

Give a brief blurb about your position and high-level goals for the year

The VP of Advocacy oversees all advocacy affairs of GAPSA.Goals:(1)Foster a sense of community & connect all students across the 12 schools at Penn; (2)Empower and provide a holistic support for our students; (3)Improve transparency & communication with our student body, different student groups, G12+ schools, University partners, and beyond.
